Green Pilgrim Jerusalem is a concept and platform for interfaith dialogue, sustainable tourism and triple-bottom-line economic development. Other pilgrim cities and sites throughout the Holy Land are invited to join us on this journey, in the conviction that this concept will enable us not only to nurture our communities and natural resources but also to reach out to the billions of people of faith around the world who cherish Jerusalem and other holy sites as important spiritual destinations.
The concept offers an innovative approach for tourism in cities and sites, which host millions of pilgrims seasonally and annually, who have traditionally trampled their resources, overloaded their infrastructure and challenged their residents’ patience.
The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem has established a non-profit organization, together with the Green Pilgrim Jerusalem team, called Saint Lazare Holy Land.
Since then, different green projects have been initiated, such as promoting accessibility to pilgrimage sites in the old city of Jerusalem, hospitality paths in the desert, raising awareness to aspects of sustainability and developing urban agricultural and bio-diversity projects.

``Green pilgrims will strive to “leave a positive footprint”, based on a mindset created during the preparation for their journey. Holy sites and cities can seize the opportunity to strengthen their local economies, engage diverse communities in the dialogue of hospitality, and focus not only on the pilgrims’ spiritual experience, but also on cultural and social interactions along the route.
- Focus on work with residents to strengthen local economy.
- Fostering an interfaith dialogue, encouraging respect for “the other”
- integrating nature into the pilgrim experience
- integrating social interactions along the way
- Encouraging volunteering in local communities``
